Peanuts April 29, 2008

My parents always used to tell me that my tastes would change as I grew older.  I never believed them.  I didn’t like asparagus then and I sure as hell don’t like it now.  But there’s one thing that I could never appreciate in my youth that I doubt I could go a day without today: peanuts.

I love peanuts.  They are awesome.  Sure, no one will recommend eating a tin-full per sitting, but a handful of good, salted (or honey roasted) peanuts in the afternoon really makes a great snack.  Once I finally realized how incredibly scrumptious peanuts were, I was instantly opened up to an entirely new world of snack food.  Snickers had been passable before: they are bliss now.  I used to prefer regular M&M’s to the peanut variety, but no longer.

As much as I don’t enjoy my bi-weekly plane ride, they would be worse if it weren’t for those tiny peanut pouches they pass out to peeved passengers.  (That’s an alliterative masterpiece. – Ed)  Peanuts used to ruin a batch of brownies (walnuts still do) or a good ice cream cone.  Now, I sit here with a jar on my desk eye them up and down every thirty minutes or so.  If it weren’t for these peanuts, I don’t know what I’d be snacking on – but I guarantee it’d be worse for me.

Thoughts on Moving April 25, 2008

I’m settled on the idea of moving come summertime. There’s only so much a young man can take when it comes to living at home in a strange and boring town like Dayton, Ohio. I’ve sketched out the move in my head and I’m fairly certain it’ll happen some time in August. I hope to take a week off and use that week to pile all of my belongings into my car and hit the road.

It’s an 18 hour drive to Boulder.  Not bad.  I might be able to do that in one day, but I don’t think I’ll push myself.

Rather than surfing Craigslist for an available apartment before heading west, what I’d most like to do is get out there, put most of my belongings into storage and crash on my friend Michelle’s floor, much as I did last weekend.  If she’ll let me take four weekends to get situated and identify my ideal rental property, that’ll be perfect.  And who knows?  Maybe I’ll even find something to buy.  I hear it’s not a bad time to get into real estate.

In other news, today wasn’t bad.  A thirty mile ride and a two mile run… it hurt, but it was worthwhile.  I definitely haven’t been out on my bike enough this year and it just felt great to put some miles behind me.  Thirty isn’t too shabby, either.

Best Weekend Ever? April 22, 2008

Well, I just had the best weekend I’ve had in months.

I’ve had the itch to move out for a while, and I’ve always known I’d want to move somewhere a little further away than normal.  There were a bunch of cities on my list: Austin, Portland, Seattle, Santa Fe, Raleigh and Boulder.  One of my co-workers has an apartment in Boulder, so I decided to head out west and crash at her place for a weekend.  All I wanted to do was get a feel for the place.  I got that feel.

Boulder is the the coolest town in the U.S. and I am moving out there as soon as I can get my shit together.

On Friday, I woke up and walked around for about an hour.  I was still on east-coast time, so I was up pretty early.  I checked out the Pearl Street Mall and wandered aimlessly until the establishments started to open up.  I stopped in at a bike shop to chat for a little while, grabbed a quick bite to eat and then set out for a forty-five minute run.  It was a pretty shitty run, and uphill.  I cramped up bad toward the end, but I blame that on the altitude.  When it was over, I sat on the lawn in Central Park to stretch and enjoy the scenery.

The rest of the day was spent exploring Boulder by car, with a two-hour hike worked in the middle.  I got myself lost in REI for about an hour (I love that store) and then hopped into Whole Foods to pick up some ingredients for dinner: fresh pasta sauce, ground buffalo and home-made noodles.  NICE.

Saturday was even better.  Woke up, ate some breakfast and set out for a run.  The weather was gorgeous – upper 60’s and sunny.  The goal was a ten-miler, but I was feeling so great around the nine-mile mark that I decided to go for broke: 13.1 miles (a half-marathon).  It worked!  I hit my goal at just under 9-minute pace.  Awesome.

As expected, that run had me feeling pretty damn drained, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me.  After a quick lunch (left-overs), I set back out to investigate the Boulder Farmer’s Market.  I bought a fresh fruit smoothie and sat back down on the lawn to enjoy the sun and scenery for the second day in a row. (Editor’s note – the scenery in Boulder is pretty damn good, if you get my meaning.)

Around three, I decided I need to get a haircut, so I scrambled to find a barber.  I must have snuck in to the stop just before closing, but I still managed to get a trim before parking my car at the base of the Flatirons and hiking up to Royal Arch. It was a bit more strenuous than I expected (compounded by the fact that I had run thirteen miles earlier that day) but the view from the top was well worth it.  I could have sat up there for hours, but my time in Boulder was limited.  I had to get down, get some food in me and keep exploring that little town.

To make an already long story a bit shorter, I ate and then hit a bar with one of the guys from the same apartment complex.  He was talking all about stocks and investment and things that I know very little about, but it was still a good time.

I hit the road early Sunday morning for the Denver airport.  It was damn difficult for me to leave after such a great time, but now my heart is set on a move out there.

On Sunday night, my throat was scratchy.  On Monday, it hurt a little bit.  On Tuesday, I was a veritable snot factory.  Just what I needed: another cold.

I wash my hands more often than most people I know.  I’m quite clean, I eat reasonably well and I work out. So would someone please explain to me why I seem to catch every little bug that comes my way? I know, I know – so I’m on four different airplanes a week. After the first few months, you’d think I’d have caught every strain of anything that could do me wrong. But no, I can’t go two illness-free weeks in a row.

Anyway, I’ve been dealing with that cold all week.  Yesterday, we (and by we, I mean my co-workers) went to a hibachi restaurant. It was quite delicious. Lunch today’ll be a footlong sub from Subway, as I’ve got to put half of it into my bag and save it for… wait for it… wait for it…

BOULDER!

That’s right, I’m flying to Boulder this afternoon.  And I might even get upgraded to first class!  Wouldn’t that be swell.  Yep, I’ve got a whole weekend booked in Colorado and absolutely no plans. It’s going to be awesome. I cannot wait. Meanwhile, if anyone has any tips or good places in the Boulder area for me to check out, I’d love to hear them.

Another Dull Weekend + Running April 13, 2008

This weekend was another dull one.  Rather than typing up a few long-winded paragraphs, I’ll just summarize the past four days in a handful of bullet-points:

  • My flights were all on time on Thursday!  That never happens.  Unfortunately, I’m on some late flights tonight and it doesn’t look like I’ll be arriving at the hotel until midnight or later.  What’s that going to do to my usual Monday-morning gym session?
  • Kicked the shit out of a ten-mile run on Friday.  I wasn’t really looking forward to the run and kept putting it off, but by the time I finally hit my stride, I felt great.  The minutes just melted away… and I wasn’t even that sore afterward!
  • Battlestar Galactica is back and it’s rocking.  The latest episode was alright.  The season premiere OWNED though.  I really like that they’re ending the show after this season – better to do that than drag it out for ten years (*cough* SG-1 *cough*).
  • I did nothing on Saturday.  Wait, I ran for 35 minutes and then did nothing.  Sweet.
  • Today is Sunday and Sundays are travel days.  That means all I do is sit around and wait.
  • Oh yeah, one more thing: TOM BOONEN won Paris-Roubaix today!  He’s such a bad ass.  I know the Belgian press was starting to mutter about the poor guy – he hasn’t been posting the results they want – but winning this mega-classic will shut the media up quick.  Mental note: before I die, I want to see the end of Paris-Roubaix from the Roubaix Velodrome.  How brilliant would that be?

One Step Forward… April 9, 2008

It’s Wednesday and I am proud to report that I’m on-track to hit 30 miles this week, even though my legs are screaming with soreness.  I’ve just got to get a 40-minute run in this afternoon and then I have tomorrow to recover before a longer run on Friday or Saturday.  To be quite honest with you, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to do it this week.  My muscles didn’t seem to want to recover properly.  I’m still fighting that, but at least things are moving in the right direction.

Oh, one thing I thought I’d mention: during last night’s 60-minute run, the power to my treadmill spontaneously died.  It must have been right around minute 33 and I was in the zone and then BLAM! the whole thing just stopped moving.  I nearly plowed into through the front console.  Fortunately, my gym has a track and as soon as I regained my senses, I just hopped off and started jogging in circles.

Alright, it’s been five days, but I’m finally running again.  I must say, that food poisoning fiasco was an ordeal that I hope I never have to live through again.  It was miserable, and it set me back quite a bit.

I’m home for the weekend and the weather’s finally nice enough for some pleasant outdoor running.  I suited up and hit the road for a flat 10K and punched the clock at 52:27 – not too bad!  That’s actually one of my fastest runs to date.  You won’t find me complaining – though my legs might tell another story.  I can already feel them growing stiffer and angrier by the minute.

It dawned on me just now that I’ve been completely ignoring one of my biggest interests: music.  I haven’t written two words about music on this blog.  Well, I guess that will have to change.  I don’t have time for a drawn-out post right now, so I’ll just mention two albums that have been earning a lot of playtime on my iPod lately: the new Gnarls Barkley record, The Odd Couple, and the Kooks’ sophomore release, Konk. I recommend both of them!

Everything was on the up and up when this week began.  I had a pleasant weekend visiting my sister in Cleveland.  I was upgraded to a suite in my hotel here in Virginia, and I had a decent seven-mile run on Monday morning.  Work has been evening out and slowing down a bit.  No complaints.  Until lunchtime.

Three of us went to a small restaurant for a quick meal.  I ordered a turkey-bacon-pesto wrap with provalone cheese.  It was good.  That will be the last turkey-bacon-pesto wrap I eat for a very, very long time.

A few hours after lunch, my stomach started to gurgle and rumble unhappily.   It felt like bad gas, only worse.  I left work around six, went back to my hotel room and laid down for a fifteen-minute post-work nap.  Monday nights are lifting nights, you see.  Unfortunately, fifteen minutes turned into an hour and when I woke up, it was to dart into the bathroom.  Yep.  Food poisoning.  From that point on, it was thirty minutes of sleep interrupted by thirty minutes hunched over the toilet… until 4 AM.

The next day was just as unpleasant, though I didn’t throw up again.  I was too nauseous to move, my stomach too sensitive to eat.  I laid in bed all day long, watching television (there’s a lot of Scrubs on TV these days) and wallowing in self-pity.  There are few things more miserable than dealing with food poisoning all alone, in a crap-ass hotel 600 miles from home.

It’s Wednesday now and I’m recovering.  Since that wrap, I’ve eaten: one piece of toast, one bowl of chicken noodle soup, and one milano.  Bet you ten bucks I’m under a buck-forty after this whole fiasco’s died down.  I just hope I can get back to running by Friday – my muscles feel sore and worn in strange ways from all of this malnourishment.
